How to use the AI PDF summarizer

How private PDF summarizing works (extraction happens locally)
When you drop a PDF into the tool, it is loaded directly into your browser's memory — it is never sent over the network to any server. The tool uses pdf.js(the same open-source library that powers PDF viewing in Chrome) to open the file and read the text content of each page, entirely on your device.
Only the extracted text — not the PDF file itself — is passed to the AI model for summarization. When Chrome's built-in on-device AI (Gemini Nano) is available, that text never leaves your browser either. If you configure an optional Cloudflare Worker fallback, the extracted text is sent only to that endpoint you control.
This means you can safely summarize contracts, resumes, research papers, and other sensitive documents without worrying about them being uploaded, stored, or shared.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is read and its text extracted entirely inside your browser using pdf.js. Only the extracted text is sent to the AI model — and when Chrome's built-in AI is available, that also happens entirely on your device. The PDF file itself is never uploaded anywhere.

What happens if my PDF is scanned or has no selectable text?
If no selectable text can be found in the PDF, the tool shows a friendly message letting you know this may be a scanned or image-only PDF. Scanned PDFs need OCR before they can be summarized as text.
Is there a limit to how much of the PDF gets summarized?
Very long documents are capped at roughly the first 15,000 characters of extracted text so the AI model can process them quickly. If your PDF is truncated, the tool shows a note telling you how much was summarized.
Why does the tool ask me to enable Chrome built-in AI?
This tool uses Chrome's built-in on-device AI (Gemini Nano) so summarization happens privately without sending your document text anywhere. If your browser does not support it yet, you can alternatively configure a Cloudflare Worker AI endpoint as a fallback.
What PDF sizes and page counts are supported?
Most reports, articles, and e-books work well. Very large PDFs may take longer to extract text from, and only the first ~15,000 characters of extracted text are sent for summarization.
