VAT Rates Around the World
VAT (Value Added Tax) — also called GST in Australia, India, Canada, Singapore, and New Zealand — is a consumption tax collected at each stage of the supply chain. The end consumer bears the full cost. Rates vary widely: from 0% in Qatar and Kuwait to 20% in the UK and France.
In the GCC, three countries have implemented VAT: UAE at 5% (since January 2018), Saudi Arabia at 15% (raised from 5% in July 2020), and Bahrain at 10% (raised from 5% in January 2022). Oman charges 5% (since April 2021).
How to Add VAT
To add VAT to a net (pre-tax) amount:
VAT Amount = Net × (Rate ÷ 100)
Gross = Net + VAT Amount
Example: AED 1,000 at 5% UAE VAT → VAT = AED 50 → Gross = AED 1,050.
How to Remove VAT (Reverse VAT Calculation)
To extract VAT from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price:
Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
VAT = Gross − Net
Example: SAR 1,150 receipt at 15% Saudi VAT → Net = 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 1,000 → VAT = SAR 150.
