What Is GST and How Is It Calculated?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's comprehensive indirect tax that replaced VAT, service tax, central excise duty, and other levies in July 2017. It is a destination-based tax applied at every stage of the supply chain, with businesses able to claim input tax credit for GST paid on purchases.
GST is divided into two components for intra-state transactions: CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST), each at half the applicable rate. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is levied at the full rate.
GST Slabs — Which Rate Applies?
| Slab | CGST | SGST | Common Items |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 2.5% | 2.5% | Essential food, transport, newspapers |
| 12% | 6% | 6% | Processed food, computers, mobiles |
| 18% | 9% | 9% | Most services, electronics, AC, cameras |
| 28% | 14% | 14% | Luxury cars, tobacco, aerated drinks |
Reverse GST Calculation (Inclusive Mode)
When a price already includes GST, use the reverse formula: Base Price = Inclusive Price × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate). This is useful when you receive an invoice showing GST-inclusive amounts and need to extract the net price and tax component separately.
How to Use the GST Calculator
- Step 1: Enter the base amount (net price if GST-exclusive, or total price if GST-inclusive).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is GST in India?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple central and state taxes in 2017. It is levied on the supply of goods and services at four main slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST and SGST are each half the GST rate and apply to intra-state transactions. For example, 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. IGST applies to inter-state transactions at the full GST rate.
How do I calculate GST exclusive price?
GST Amount = Base Price × GST Rate / 100. Total = Base + GST. For ₹1,000 at 18%: GST = ₹180, Total = ₹1,180.
How do I reverse calculate GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Base Price = Inclusive Price × 100 / (100 + Rate). GST = Inclusive − Base. For ₹1,180 at 18%: Base = ₹1,000, GST = ₹180.
Which products attract 28% GST?
The 28% slab applies to luxury and sin goods: cars, motorcycles above 350cc, ACs, cigarettes, tobacco, aerated drinks, and casino/betting services.
