How Prayer Times Are Calculated

Prayer times are determined by the sun's position relative to your latitude and longitude. Each prayer corresponds to a specific solar event: Fajr at astronomical dawn (sun 18°–18.5° below the horizon), Dhuhr at solar noon, Asr when an object's shadow equals its height (Shafi) or twice its height (Hanafi), Maghrib at sunset, and Isha at astronomical dusk.

This tool uses the AlAdhan API, which applies precise astronomical formulas to your GPS coordinates. If the API is unavailable, a local fallback calculation using the same formulas runs entirely in your browser.

Calculation Methods Explained

Different Islamic authorities define slightly different angles for Fajr and Isha. The most widely used methods are:

  • Umm Al-Qura (Method 4) — Saudi Arabia, most GCC countries. Fajr at 18.5°, Isha fixed 90 min after Maghrib.
  • Muslim World League (Method 3) — Standard for international use. Fajr 18°, Isha 17°.
  • ISNA (Method 2) — North America. Fajr 15°, Isha 15°.

The API uses your exact GPS coordinates for maximum accuracy. If the API is unavailable, the tool falls back to local astronomical calculations using the same formulas, which are accurate to within 1-2 minutes.

How do browser notifications work for prayer times?

Click the bell icon in the Prayer Times tool and grant notification permission. The tool will schedule a browser notification 5 minutes before each upcoming prayer time. Notifications work even if the tab is in the background. You must keep the browser tab open — the tool does not run as a background service. For persistent notifications, consider a dedicated prayer app.

What is the Hijri date?

The Hijri calendar (Islamic calendar) is a lunar calendar of 12 months based on the moon's cycle. It begins from the year of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) migration from Mecca to Medina (622 CE). The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Islamic events like Ramadan shift earlier each year.

Do prayer times change every day?

Yes. Prayer times shift slightly each day as the Earth's position relative to the sun changes throughout the year. In summer months, Fajr is earlier and Isha is later (longer days). In winter, the opposite occurs. The differences are most pronounced at higher latitudes like Northern Europe where daylight hours vary dramatically.
