Understanding the Islamic Lunar Calendar (التقويم الهجري)
The Islamic calendar (also known as the Hijri calendar, or at-taqwīm al-hijrī) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used worldwide by over 1.9 billion Muslims to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays, such as the period of Ramadan, the twoEids (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha), the time for the Hajj pilgrimage, and the observance of sacred days.
The calendar counts years from the year of the Hijrah (AH — Anno Hegirae), when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions migrated from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian year, the months cycle through all four seasons over a 33-year period.
The Four Sacred Months (الأشهر الحرم)
In Islamic tradition, four of the twelve months are designated as Sacred Months (Al-Ashhur Al-Hurum). As mentioned in the Holy Quran (9:36): "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred."
These four months are:
- 1. Muharram (محرم): The first month of the Islamic year, containing the Day of Ashura (10th Muharram).
- 7. Rajab (رجب): A solitary sacred month preceding Sha'ban and Ramadan, marking Isra wal-Mi'raj.
- 11. Dhul-Qa'dah (ذو القعدة): The month of resting from conflicts and preparing for pilgrimage.
- 12. Dhul-Hijjah (ذو الحجة): The month of Hajj pilgrimage, the Day of Arafah, and Eid al-Adha.
White Days (أيام البيض — Ayyam al-Beed)
The 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month are known as Ayyam al-Beed (The White Days) because the night is illuminated by the brightness of the full moon. Fasting these three days every month is a highly recommended Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who stated that fasting three days of every month is equivalent to fasting continuously for a lifetime.
Frequently Asked Questions
What year is it in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar?
The current Islamic year is 1447 AH / 1448 AH. The Hijri calendar began in 622 CE when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madinah (known as the Hijrah).
How does the Islamic calendar work?
The Islamic calendar is a strictly lunar calendar consisting of 12 synodic lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon (Hilal) or astronomical calculation (such as the Umm Al-Qura or Tabular arithmetic calendar).
Why does the Islamic calendar move 10 to 11 days earlier each year?
A solar year is approximately 365.24 days, while 12 lunar months total approximately 354.36 days. Because the lunar year is roughly 10 to 12 days shorter than the solar year, Islamic months and holidays move backward through the Gregorian seasons in a cycle of about 33 years.
What are the 4 Sacred Months (الأشهر الحرم) in Islam?
The four sacred months in Islam mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36) are: 1. Muharram, 7. Rajab, 11. Dhul-Qa'dah, and 12. Dhul-Hijjah. In these months, good deeds are multiplied in reward and transgressions are held in greater severity.
What are White Days (Ayyam al-Beed)?
Ayyam al-Beed (أيام البيض — The White Days) are the 13th, 14th, and 15th days of every lunar month when the full moon shines brightest. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly recommended fasting on these three days, which is rewarded like fasting an entire lifetime.
