TL;DR: Amazon FBA profit = selling price minus referral fee (8–20%), FBA fulfillment fee ($3.22–$26+), product cost, inbound shipping, storage, advertising, and return costs. Use the Amazon FBA calculator to enter your category and size tier — the fees fill in automatically.

Amazon FBA removes the headache of pick, pack, and ship — but every convenience comes with a price tag. Sellers who do not model every fee before launching a product routinely discover their "profitable" item is losing money at scale. Here is the full breakdown.

The 6 FBA fee types

  1. Referral fee — Amazon's commission, charged as a percentage of the selling price. Ranges from 6% (personal computers) to 20% (jewellery). Most categories are 15%.
  2. FBA fulfillment fee — covers pick, pack, and ship from an Amazon fulfillment center. Determined by product size tier and weight.
  3. Monthly storage fee — charged per cubic foot of space your inventory uses. Standard rate: $0.78/cu ft Jan–Sep, $2.40/cu ft Oct–Dec (peak surcharge).
  4. Long-term storage fee — applies to inventory over 365 days old. $6.90/cu ft or $0.15/unit (whichever is greater).
  5. Inbound shipping — what you pay to get inventory from supplier to Amazon warehouse.
  6. Advertising (PPC) — Sponsored Products cost. Your average ACoS expressed as a per-unit cost.

What is break-even selling price?

Break-even selling price is the minimum price you can list the product at and still recover all costs. It is calculated as:

Break-Even Price = Variable Costs ÷ ((1 − Referral Fee %) × (1 − Return Rate %))

Variable costs include COGS, FBA fee, inbound shipping, advertising, and storage per unit. Pricing above this number generates profit; below it generates a loss per unit regardless of volume.

How to improve Amazon FBA margins

  • Reduce dimensional weight. FBA fees are based on the larger of actual vs dimensional weight. Slimmer packaging can move you down a size tier — saving $1–3/unit at volume.
  • Lower advertising cost. A strong organic rank from reviews and keyword relevance reduces PPC dependency. Even dropping ACoS from $5 to $3/unit adds $2 straight to profit.
  • Manage inventory age. Avoid long-term storage fees by forecasting demand accurately. Use Amazon's inventory age report to identify slow-moving SKUs early.
  • Negotiate COGS. At 1,000 units per order vs 100, supplier costs often drop 15–25%. That alone can double your net margin.

Frequently asked questions

Is the referral fee charged on the full selling price? Yes — including any shipping you charge the customer. It is calculated on the total order amount, not just the item price.

Are FBA fees the same year-round? No. Storage fees nearly triple in Q4 (October–December) due to peak surcharges. Model this separately if you carry heavy holiday inventory.

What is a good Amazon FBA net margin? 15–25% is healthy for most physical product categories. Below 10% leaves little buffer for price competition or ad cost increases.
