How Prayer Times Are Calculated
Prayer times are calculated based on the position of the sun relative to your location. The calculation uses your latitude and longitude to determine the exact moment the sun reaches the required angle below the horizon for each prayer.
Fajr begins at astronomical dawn when the sun is 18° below the horizon. Dhuhr is at solar noon. Asr is when the shadow of an object equals its length (Shafi) or twice its length (Hanafi). Maghrib is at sunset. Isha is when the sun is again 18° below the horizon.
Calculation Methods
Different Islamic authorities use slightly different angles for Fajr and Isha: Umm Al-Qura (used in Saudi Arabia and most GCC countries) uses 18.5° for Fajr and fixed 90 minutes after Maghrib for Isha. The Muslim World League uses 18° for both Fajr and Isha. You can switch methods in the Settings panel to match your local mosque.
