Qibla Direction: How to Find the Direction of Prayer from Anywhere in the World

From New York, Qibla is north-east at about 58°. From London it is south-east at 119°. From Sydney it is north-west at 277°. From Bahrain it is almost directly west at 259°. The direction is different from every point on Earth — and it is not the direction that feels intuitively "towards Mecca" on a flat map. Here is why, and how to find your exact Qibla bearing.

Why Qibla Is Different Everywhere

On a flat map (Mercator projection), the path to Mecca looks like a straight diagonal line. But on a globe, the shortest path between two points curves along a great circle — the largest circle that can be drawn on a sphere passing through both points. This shortest path is what Islamic scholars agree is the correct direction for Qibla.

The initial bearing of this great-circle path is what determines your Qibla direction. Because the Earth is a sphere, this bearing can differ dramatically from what you'd expect on a flat map. From North America, the great-circle path to Mecca actually goes north-east (over the Arctic), not south-east as a flat map would suggest.

The Great-Circle Calculation

The Qibla bearing is calculated using the spherical law of cosines or the Haversine formula. Given your coordinates (φ₁, λ₁) and the Kaaba's coordinates (φ₂ = 21.4225°N, λ₂ = 39.8262°E):

Δλ = λ₂ − λ₁
y  = sin(Δλ) × cos(φ₂)
x  = cos(φ₁) × sin(φ₂) − sin(φ₁) × cos(φ₂) × cos(Δλ)
bearing = atan2(y, x) converted to [0°, 360°]

True North vs Magnetic North

The Qibla bearing is measured from True North (geographic north, the direction of the North Pole). A physical compass points to Magnetic North, which is offset from True North by an angle called magnetic declination — this varies from about −20° (Western USA) to +30° (Northern Canada) depending on location.

Digital devices like smartphones automatically compensate for magnetic declination in software, so they report headings relative to True North. This is why our live compass works correctly without manual adjustment. If you are using a traditional magnetic compass, you need to apply the local magnetic declination to get the correct Qibla bearing.

Using the Live Compass

The live compass uses your device's magnetometer. Here's how to get accurate readings:

  1. Enable GPS — Your Qibla bearing is calculated from your exact location, not a generic city center.
  2. Enable Live Compass — On iOS 13+, your browser will ask for motion & orientation permission. Tap Allow.
  3. Calibrate if needed — If the compass behaves erratically, move your phone in a figure-8 (∞) pattern several times to re-expose the sensor to Earth's magnetic field from multiple angles.
  4. Keep flat or vertical — The magnetometer works best when the phone is held flat (screen up) or upright. Avoid tilting at odd angles.
  5. Stay away from metal — Large metal objects, refrigerators, speakers, and electronics interfere with the magnetometer. Move to an open area.

When you are within 3° of the Qibla direction, the compass needle turns green and your device vibrates to confirm alignment.

The Islamic Ruling on Qibla Accuracy

All four major Islamic schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi, Hanbali) agree that one must face the direction of the Kaaba, not the exact point. For those at a great distance from Makkah (which is almost everyone), facing the general direction is sufficient for prayer validity. The technical term for this is facing the jiha (جهة) — the general direction — rather than the exact ain (عين) — the precise point.

In practice, being within a few degrees is considered more than sufficient. The purpose of tools like ours is not to create anxiety about perfect alignment, but to help Muslims face the correct general direction with confidence.
