The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) uses a tiered tariff system where the rate per unit increases as your consumption rises. Understanding which tier you're in — and why your summer bill can be three times your winter one — is the first step to managing costs. This guide explains the full rate structure and how to use the calculator.

How EWA's tiered electricity tariff works

EWA charges Bahraini domestic customers on a four-tier progressive electricity tariff. Only the units within each band are charged at that band's rate — not your entire consumption:

  • 0–3,000 kWh: 0.003 BD/kWh — heavily subsidised, roughly 9 BD total
  • 3,001–5,000 kWh: 0.009 BD/kWh
  • 5,001–7,000 kWh: 0.016 BD/kWh
  • Above 7,000 kWh: 0.032 BD/kWh
  • Administration fee: 1.000 BD flat

Example: a household using 4,500 kWh in a month pays 3,000 × 0.003 = 9 BD for the first block, then 1,500 × 0.009 = 13.5 BD for the second block, plus 1 BD admin — a total of 23.5 BD.

Water tariff tiers

Water is billed on a three-tier structure for Bahraini domestic accounts:

  • 0–60 m³: 0.025 BD/m³
  • 61–100 m³: 0.080 BD/m³
  • Above 100 m³: 0.775 BD/m³ — a sharp jump designed to discourage excessive use
  • Administration fee: 1.000 BD flat

A standard household uses 15–40 m³/month, firmly in the first tier. Pools, large gardens or commercial kitchens can push consumption into the expensive third tier quickly.

Subsidized vs expatriate rates

Bahraini citizens receive the subsidized tariff shown above. Expatriate residents are on unsubsidized (commercial) tariffs with higher per-unit rates across all tiers. The calculator supports both account types — select the correct one at the top before entering your consumption to get an accurate estimate.

Why summer bills are so much higher

Bahrain has a desert climate. From May to September, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, and air conditioners run almost continuously — often 18–22 hours a day. A typical household that uses 1,500 kWh in January can easily reach 5,000–8,000 kWh in July. The jump from the first tier (0.003 BD/kWh) to the third or fourth tier (0.016–0.032 BD/kWh) means the marginal cost per unit is 5–10× higher in summer, amplifying the bill increase beyond the raw consumption increase.

Reading your meter vs using your bill

The calculator has two input modes. By Consumption is the simplest — just enter the kWh and m³ figures shown on your bill. By Meter Reading lets you enter your current and previous meter readings, and the calculator derives consumption automatically. This is useful mid-billing-cycle if you want to estimate your current bill before it arrives.

Tips to reduce your EWA bill

  • Set air conditioners to 24–26°C rather than 18–20°C. Each degree warmer reduces AC consumption by roughly 6–8%.
  • Upgrade to inverter-type ACs — they reduce electricity consumption by up to 40% compared to fixed-speed units.
  • Run heavy appliances (washing machine, dishwasher) during the cooler evening hours to reduce peak load.
  • Fix dripping taps immediately — a single slow drip wastes 3–5 m³/month, which at 0.025 BD/m³ is small, but unchecked leaks can reach the expensive third water tier.
  • Switch to LED bulbs — they use 75–80% less energy than incandescent or halogen alternatives.
